Assignment #11

Oppression is cruel or unjust treatment that is prolonged. The difference between Violent and NonViolent Resistance is where in violent protest, people use that treat are harming things, people, anything to get their way (Like a riot). And NonViolent resistance is where you don’t hurt anybody in your plead of resistance (Like a march or a protest). Agency is when you can make decisions for yourself and not have been told by anybody what you can and cannot do. Oppressed people always fight back but they have to choose how to fight back, and I think people should use violent resistance to fight back their oppressors like leading a revolt or understanding the importance of a riot.

To begin with, people should use Violent resistance to fight back in a war. A document I produce myself is about the conflicts of World War 2 and how they fought off the axis to reclaim europe. The document is an article from a website called www.history.com and the article is about the history of the second World War  and the events that lead to its demise made by History staff in 2009. Is the source reliable? Yes and no because the author was probably wasn’t even there but this war happened not that long ago and in that time we could document it. A quote from the article states, “An intensive aerial bombardment in February 1945 preceded the Allied land invasion of Germany, and by the time Germany formally surrendered on May 8, Soviet forces had occupied much of the country.” To explain, this quote shows that the allies used Violent Resistance because they fought their oppressors (The Nazis) to take back land that they conquered. Also they won so which means that violent resistance does work.

Secondally, people might not think that Violent resistance might be wrong,  but a one really important figure will tell you it ok to fight back with any sort of means. The next document is about a speech delivered by Martin Luther King Jr about how he feels about Violent Resistance. The document is An excerpt from a speech titled “The Other America” delivered by Dr. Martin Luther King at Grosse Pointe High School on March 14th, 1968. The source is reliable because speech was given by Martin Luther King Jr himself in front of thousands of people. A quote from the document states, “But it is not enough for me to stand before you tonight and condemn riots. It would be morally irresponsible for me to do that without, at the same time, condemning intolerable conditions that exist in our society. These conditions are the things that cause individuals to feel that they have no other alternative than to engage in violent rebellions to get attention. And I must say tonight that a riot is the language of the unheard.” To summarize, This is talking about Violent Resistance because Martin Luther King is stating that He is not saying is bad he saying is still a way to resist oppression and should not be seen as an act for people to not know how to fight back.

Finally, Another way to fight back Oppressors is if they hurt you first, you can get them back by Violent Resistance. The last document is about a place in South Africa called Soweto that still slavery in the 70’s or 80’s. This document is an article from the website called www.findingdulcinea.com titled “Soweto Uprising Begins With Violence During Student Protest.”  It was written by Denis Cummings on June 16, 2011. And this is a reliable source because this was documented and this wasn’t a long time ago. A quote from the document states,”Police attempted to stop the peaceful march by firing tear gas into the crowd; some students responded by tossing back the teargas canisters or throwing stones at the police. Police released dogs into the crowd, but many of the dogs were killed with rocks and knives. As the students continued to march forward, Col. Johannes Kleingeld, the station commander of the Orlando Police Station, fired into the crowd, and other officers followed. The students, soon joined by older Sowetans, began rioting and attacking “anything that symbolized the state or white power,” recalled student leader Oupa Moloto to reporter Raymond Whitaker. They destroyed and looted buildings, smashed cars, set fires and tossed stones.” To explain, The soweto students were doing a peaceful march and the police attacked them first. And This is an example of violent resistance because a violent protest or riot doesn’t come out of nowhere, the police attacked them first and they came back angry and that what the oppressors deserve.

  1. What are the different statuses on the posters, and what do each of them mean?

The difference between the posters is that there used to be more open issues on the 13th, but on the 27th there are way more on the acknowledge side that the open, and there are some in the closed side as well. This means SeeClickFix actually does help and listens to us for a way better community.

2. Describe what you did (or what you were supposed to do) to find out if the issue you submitted to SeeClickFix was fixed.

You were supposed to go on the SeeClickFix website, sign in into your account, click on the person icon on the top right corner, click on my “my content”, find the name of the issue you reported, then your your status.

-In your own words describe what the company called SEECLICKFIX does for people living in Oakland.

SeeClickFix is a Helper for all communities and actually listen to small voices that want the space they live in more cleaner and safer

-Do you think SEECLICKFIX helps people in Oakland to resist oppression?  Explain why, or why not.

Yes because there are two kinds of people that are oppressing us. One is the people that are making Oakland look dirty, those are the people that throw trash and tag up streets. And the other kind of people are the one that don’t care and don’t clean up the mess that this city has.

-Explain the story of how you took your picture for the SEECLICKFIX project (Describe what you took a picture of, when you took it, where you were, how, and why).

So I was taking the bus to go to my house after school, then I went to the store to go buy a drink, then I was walking to my house then I trip really bad. I was about to hit my head but I saved myself, then I remembered about Mr.Muniz’s SeeClickFix Project. Then I sent the picture to Mr.Muniz.

-What did you do in class to join SEECLICKFIX on their website?  Describe the steps you took.

All I did was go to the website, and make an account.

-What did you do in class to report an issue to SEECLICKFIX? DON’T FORGET TO SHARE YOUR ISSUE ID NUMBER!  Describe the steps you took.

I first took a picture(of a broken sidewalk, trash, potholes, or graffiti) then sent it to my teacher Mr.Muniz, wait till it gets submitted, then get a sticky note with all the info that issue had, then wait till it gets acknowledge

-Do you predict that the City of Oakland will fix the problem you reported?  Explain why, or why not.

Probably yes because there a lot of things that is wrong with Oakland and I think the people might want it to look like a nice city to the rest of the world.

Research Assignment #2 – EMBED A MAP

Occupy Oakland is a movement where protesters state their occupations to stand up the police brutality and the action police take towards people of color. But the police moved them out so nobody does this anymore. This is system of political oppression because the police are involved and they are moving people that are just trying to stand up for themselves and others. This story happened in Oakland, California, 2011.

Assignment #9

Oppressed people means people that have been a victim of cruel or unjust treatment that is unfair or prolonged. It could be anything like racism, sexist remarks, etc. The systems of oppression are systems in your daily life that are being used in a hateful and unfair way and it consists of Economic, Social, and Political. The levels of oppression are oppression based on people themselves that is unfair or just cruel to them and it also consists of three things, institutional, Interpersonal, and Internalized. And some ways people can get oppressed by these types of oppression are getting killed or or getting put in jail just because how you did in school.

To start with, One way people get oppressed interpersonally is by getting killed because they you are trying to go to school. A document I read was about the girls in Afghanistan getting killed because they are trying to get an education. The document is an article titled “Acid attacks, poison: What Afghan girls risk by going to school” posted on the website CNN.com.  It was written by Allie Torgan on March 17, 2016. A quote from the document states,”It is heartbreaking to see the way these terrorists treat … women,” said Jan, 68. “In their eyes, a women is an object that they can control. They are scared that when these girls get an education, they will become aware of their rights as women and as a human being.” To explain Afghanistan terrorist are killing innocent girls because they are scared that they would be aware of their rights. They mistreating by killing, blowing up schools, and throwing acid at the girls faces.  Its an example of interpersonal oppression because they are mistreating a group of people and trying to control them, and they are saying that they are the dominant group even though nobody should be dominant.

Secondally, a way that people get oppressed institutionally is by going into prison just because they were bad in school, especially the youth. A document I read was about the school-to-prison pipeline, a system or process that pushes kids like me out of school into Prison because they break enforced rules. This is a quote from an article on a website called thoughtco.com.  The article is titled “Understanding the School-to-Prison Pipeline” and it was written by by Nicki Lisa Cole, Ph.D. on April 25, 2017. A quote form the document states,”.. it is a process of criminalizing youth that is carried out by disciplinary policies within schools that put students into contact with law enforcement. Once they are put into contact with law enforcement for disciplinary reasons, many are then pushed out of the educational environment and into the juvenile and criminal justice systems.” To explain, if you do bad in school and you don’t follow the “rules and disciplinaries” law enforcement judges you how likely you are going to drop out and go to prison, and this is a problem because kids are getting pushed out and actually going to jail. And this is institutional oppression because they are mistreating a group of people with rules and disciplinaries by kicking them out of school, lose all of their academic process, and putting the kids that dropout of school in prison

Assignment #8

Power is what people have to control others to do their bidding. Marginalize is when something or someone is put to the side or to make less important. Exploit or Exploiting is when you used something or someone one for your bidding and used in an unfair way. People with power can marginalize and exploit people with different identities by forcing people into slavery, spreading hateful messages about people with different gender identities, and sacrificing people that don’t agree with it.

In the first place, people can marginalize and exploit other people with different identities because they take advantage of they people they marginalize by treating them disrespectfully, forcing people work, and using them for profit for them and not for the people that they are marginalizing. In document 3, it shows that the Natives are being treated disrespectfully. The document was from a quote from a book titled, “Colonial America”, and was written by Jerome R. Reich (1994). The document states,”….In practice they were bought and sold, worked (literally) to death and forced into virtual slavery. This reveals that people killed and used native people to their advantage for themselves (Like Slavery), which is called exploiting, and they were treated inhumanely, which is also called marginalization.

In addition, people with power are able to marginalize people with different identities by spreading hateful messages to people with different gender identities. A document that I read was about a pastor in Harlem is making hateful and controversial remarks about Homosexuals and people with different gender identity. The document is a quote from an article on a website called Amsterdamnews.com, and the article is titled “Homophobic church sign causes stir in harlem” and it was written by Cyril Josh Barker on May 3rd, 2014. A quote from the news article states,” The messages posted on the sign at the church, located at west 123rd Street and Malcolm X Boulevard, don’t hold back on manning’s massages that homosexuality is against God’s wishes and the Bible. Messages include: “Obama has released the homo demons on the Black man. Look out, Black women. A white homo may take your man,” and “Jesus would stone homos …Harlem is a homo-free zone.”  This quote shows that people with power can marginalize and exploit people with different identities because this is a church and they are exploiting their power to slander Homosexual people and slandering and treating them inhumanly is called marginalizing.

Lastly, people with power are able to marginalize and exploit people with different identities by using them and sacrificing them for their own purposes. The last document I read was about the Aztec Tribe and how they treated a guy like a king but at the end they killed him just for their god. The document was created by A seventeen year old Aztec Scribe records his impressions of a Sacrifice Ritual which is recorded and told to Friar Bernardino de Sahagun (Several years later in 1529). A quote from the document states,”When I saw this ceremony last year as a member of the priestly school, I was amazed by the physical beauty of the enemy warrior was killed at the end of the festival. This seasoned warrior, whom we change from a human into the god Tezcatlipoca, can have no blemish upon his body, and he is treated like our most royal family member during the long year leading up to his sacrifice.” To  explain, they captured an enemy warrior and treated him like he is a god, they gave him anything they wanted, but it was all leading up to a sacrifice. And he is an enemy warrior so he is different from the Aztecs and they killed him.

Assignment #6

  • What is something that you learned about Christopher Columbus that  you did not know before?

Something new I learned about Columbus was that he treated the Native people like animals.

  • Do think Christopher Columbus deserves his own holiday?  Explain your answer.

No because a lot of people need to know they are celebrating one of the world’s mass murderers, and by celebrating Columbus, they are forgetting more and more about the Native people who were innocent and giving their lives for Columbus.
